Protecting against fraud & online scams

One of the things that can come as a rude awakening to the small hospitality business is that you don't necessarily benefit from the card and bank protections of an individual and a fraud against you is a fraud against the business so unless it is substantial your losses will be unrecoverable and even if it is substantial, can you pursauade your insurers to pay out?

We have spent a large part of our careers working in large businesses with substantial fraud protection departments (and indeed have even had responsibility for those areas of those businesses ourselves), but even we have been taken aback by the sheer scale and volume of fraud attempts perpetrated against us as a small business almost on a daily basis. With our prior career experience we've even spotted some things as scams and let them run for a bit to uncover how they work!

Here are just some of the things we can help you protect against (attempts at ALL of which we have encountered personally)

  • common telephone scams
  • accommodation/travel advance payment scams
  • credit and debit card process scams
  • scams to take over control of your bank account
  • paypal related scams
  • fake liability claims
  • fake discrimination claims
  • fake deposit/cancellation reclaim scams
  • attempts to steal your identity
  • guests staying and paying on some else's identity (identity theft)
  • online review blackmail
  • scam listing and scam SEO/SEM companies
  • Thefts by guests the police can't justify action against

"Forewarned is forearmed" is the old adage and particularly if you are a new hospitality business or a more established business transitioning increasingly into the online space, we are able to advise you - and the way we do this is similar to our Hotel Helper service, is that we come in for a half day having pre-prepared by looking at your terms and conditions and online presence and then talk through all of your processes on dealing with customers and examine how they might be compromised.
